Valentine’s Day is almost upon you.  Make your plans.  But keep in mind, in an ideal world, you are with someone you love.

So maybe you want to be with your grand-daughter or your ex-wife or your ex-wife’s grandmother, or your step daughter’s ex boyfriend.  Someone you love.  Because Valentine’s Day is actually about love.

I still say that fruit covered with chocolate is good.  And champagne is always good.  Things that are right out in terms of gifts for Valentine’s Day or any other day.  Do not give anything for cleaning.  Do not give anything for the house.  Do not give things that she would already buy herself.  For example, stamps, gas cards, gift certificates to Trader Joes, all of those are right out.  Think of all the things your partner wishes for but would not buy themselves.

So I’ll tell you my plans.  I wake up inSan Diegoand then I drive home and work from home and we are going out to sushi, sake, fresh oysters.  I am hoping for green tea ice cream as well.

I am also going to get some sort of gift for my sweetie, but I haven’t thought yet about what that should be.  It will come to me.

Next weekend we are going to Paso Robles and hanging out with my brother-in-law and his wife. Which should be great.  We’re staying at the Paso Robles Inn where we’ve stayed before.  It’s pretty nice.  The funny thing about Paso Robles is that the whole place is tiny, fewer than 30,000 people dwell in its perimeters, but it has any number of awesome restaurants.  That’s because what the area is known for is wine.  So, people come into town expecting to taste wine and go out to eat.  One thing you can say about people who go wine tasting is that they usually also like good food.

Your basic wine tasting people are not going to Red Lobster, Macaronis or any other chain restaurants.  But oddly some of these same people would go to In N’ Out on the way home.  I have never been to In N’ Out.  People are always asking why I don’t go there for the animal fries or grilled cheese sandwiches.  You have to be kidding.  I mean, first of all, I don’t eat grilled cheese sandwiches except when my friend Lisa made me one—that was amazing—but I don’t make them myself or buy them.  So, I don’t need to go to In N’ Out. I’ve never had the French fries animal style, but now I don’t have the chance because I’m on a diet and frankly, there is no diet that includes French fries and potato chips and candy which are all super important food groups that I am sad to have cut out of the list of foods I can eat.

Enough about boring diets.  Back to Paso Robles.  We are going to a cool Italian place in Paso Robles and to a few wine tasting places.  What I want to do, is find a way to relax while I am there.  I am not very good at relaxing.

I am trying to exercise an hour a day no matter what, so far, I have not been completely successful.  My need for sleep keeps getting in the way.  Better luck next week.
