NYKO Raven Review – PS3 Controller
The PlayStation 3 is home to many great first-person shooter titles. Admittedly, the PS3′s DualShock 3 isn’t the best gamepad for these games. I would rather play them with my PlayStation Move controller or with my Xbox 360 wired controller using the XCM Cross Battle Adapter (That’s right! You can use Xbox 360 controllers with the PS3).

That’s why I was so excited when I found and purchased the NYKO Raven “Alternate” controller for the PS3. It had the same control and button layout and feel as the Xbox 360 controller. The left thumbstick is now located on top of the directional buttons and triggers have replaced the traditional R2 and L2 shoulder buttons.
In addition to that, there’s a switch that toggles/switches L1 and R1 functionalities to the triggers themselves, adding to that Xbox 360 controller feel. It has an internal rechargeable battery like the Dualshock that lasts about 20 to 25 hours. With all these features, the NYKO Raven controller sounds like a dream come true for PS3 owners right?
Right?

Unfortunately the controller is hampered by a number of issues, the biggest being its horrible deadzone. Playing Battlefield Bad Company2 with the NYKO Raven was an exercise in patience as the right thumbstick’s deadzone was so imprecise, that most of my shots ended up missing its target. With the DualShock 3, I never had any issues getting headshots in BF:BC 2, yet with the Raven, I could barely even keep the weapons aimed at my opponents long enough to make any shots count. And not only that, I had to spend almost 15 minutes tweaking the sensitivity in-game just to be able to find a barely-acceptable aiming function for the battlefield.

What irked me more was that I had to do the same advanced tweaking for everyone of my games just to make the controller work (barely) with them. Not only that, moving the thumbsticks did not feel natural at all, whenever I would move them, I heard this squeaking sound from within the controller; and this was the same on a different NYKO Raven controller I tried. It just made the overall product feel amateurish and difficult to use.
To add insult to injury, almost all of the face buttons, directional buttons, and bumpers feel weird when pressed. And most of the time, button presses don’t necessarily translate to character actions on the screen. I can’t even remember how many times I missed jumps when the controller didn’t recognize and respond whenever I pressed the X (or any other) button the wrong way. And I still don’t even know what the wrong way is! I hated that I had to push hard on the face and directional buttons for them to work properly in the game.
Thankfully, the Raven does have some redeeming features such as it’s rumble and motion-sensing functionalities (a la SIXAXIS). These features replicate the same experience as with the DualShock 3′s. It was fairly easy to set-up and install -before getting into a game anyway- and the matte finish felt really nice and comfortable in my hands.
Overall, I thought that the NYKO Raven was not a suitable controller for most first and third person shooters on the PS3. The thumbsticks did not move naturally like the Xbox 360′s or the DualShock 3′s thumbsticks, the buttons were too unresponsive to be effective in any kind of competitive games as it’s easy to make mistakes when the controller does not recognize button presses unless pressed the right way. These issues along with it’s usb dongle monopolizing a USB port (since the controller does not support bluetooth tech) make the Raven a cheap imitation of Microsoft’s 360 controller for the PlayStation 3.

The history of Christmas

An Ancient Holiday

The middle of winter has long been a time of celebration around the world. Centuries before the arrival of the man called Jesus, early Europeans celebrated light and birth in the darkest days of winter. Many peoples rejoiced during the winter solstice, when the worst of the winter was behind them and they could look forward to longer days and extended hours of sunlight.

In Scandinavia, the Norse celebrated Yule from December 21, the winter solstice, through January. In recognition of the return of the sun, fathers and sons would bring home large logs, which they would set on fire. The people would feast until the log burned out, which could take as many as 12 days. The Norse believed that each spark from the fire represented a new pig or calf that would be born during the coming year.

The end of December was a perfect time for celebration in most areas of Europe. At that time of year, most cattle were slaughtered so they would not have to be fed during the winter. For many, it was the only time of year when they had a supply of fresh meat. In addition, most wine and beer made during the year was finally fermented and ready for drinking.

In Germany, people honored the pagan god Oden during the mid-winter holiday. Germans were terrified of Oden, as they believed he made nocturnal flights through the sky to observe his people, and then decide who would prosper or perish. Because of his presence, many people chose to stay inside.

Saturnalia

In Rome, where winters were not as harsh as those in the far north, Saturnalia—a holiday in honor of Saturn, the god of agriculture—was celebrated. Beginning in the week leading up to the winter solstice and continuing for a full month, Saturnalia was a hedonistic time, when food and drink were plentiful and the normal Roman social order was turned upside down. For a month, slaves would become masters. Peasants were in command of the city. Business and schools were closed so that everyone could join in the fun.

Also around the time of the winter solstice, Romans observed Juvenalia, a feast honoring the children of Rome. In addition, members of the upper classes often celebrated the birthday of Mithra, the god of the unconquerable sun, on December 25. It was believed that Mithra, an infant god, was born of a rock. For some Romans, Mithra's birthday was the most sacred day of the year.

In the early years of Christianity, Easter was the main holiday; the birth of Jesus was not celebrated. In the fourth century, church officials decided to institute the birth of Jesus as a holiday. Unfortunately, the Bible does not mention date for his birth (a fact Puritans later pointed out in order to deny the legitimacy of the celebration). Although some evidence suggests that his birth may have occurred in the spring (why would shepherds be herding in the middle of winter?), Pope Julius I chose December 25. It is commonly believed that the church chose this date in an effort to adopt and absorb the traditions of the pagan Saturnalia festival. First called the Feast of the Nativity, the custom spread to Egypt by 432 and to England by the end of the sixth century. By the end of the eighth century, the celebration of Christmas had spread all the way to Scandinavia. Today, in the Greek and Russian orthodox churches, Christmas is celebrated 13 days after the 25th, which is also referred to as the Epiphany or Three Kings Day. This is the day it is believed that the three wise men finally found Jesus in the manger.

By holding Christmas at the same time as traditional winter solstice festivals, church leaders increased the chances that Christmas would be popularly embraced, but gave up the ability to dictate how it was celebrated. By the Middle Ages, Christianity had, for the most part, replaced pagan religion. On Christmas, believers attended church, then celebrated raucously in a drunken, carnival-like atmosphere similar to today's Mardi Gras. Each year, a beggar or student would be crowned the "lord of misrule" and eager celebrants played the part of his subjects. The poor would go to the houses of the rich and demand their best food and drink. If owners failed to comply, their visitors would most likely terrorize them with mischief. Christmas became the time of year when the upper classes could repay their real or imagined "debt" to society by entertaining less fortunate citizens.

An Outlaw Christmas

In the early 17th century, a wave of religious reform changed the way Christmas was celebrated in Europe. When Oliver Cromwell and his Puritan forces took over England in 1645, they vowed to rid England of decadence and, as part of their effort, cancelled Christmas. By popular demand, Charles II was restored to the throne and, with him, came the return of the popular holiday.

The pilgrims, English separatists that came to America in 1620, were even more orthodox in their Puritan beliefs than Cromwell. As a result, Christmas was not a holiday in early America. From 1659 to 1681, the celebration of Christmas was actually outlawed in Boston. Anyone exhibiting the Christmas spirit was fined five shillings. By contrast, in the Jamestown settlement, Captain John Smith reported that Christmas was enjoyed by all and passed without incident.

After the American Revolution, English customs fell out of favor, including Christmas. In fact, Christmas wasn't declared a federal holiday until June 26, 1870.

Gamer Crash Awards 2011: Best Xbox 360 Game

The awards roll on with my pick for the best Wii Controller of this year. Unlike the VGAs, my picks are all exclusives to the Xbox. Though Microsoft may not have released as many exclusive titles as Sony this year, they still managed to deliver quality experiences. So lets take a look.
and the nominees are…

Forza Motorsport 4
One of the best sim racing games on any platform got even better when released this past October. Now integrated with over 500 cars and the UK show Top Gear, Forza 4 introduces a new mode called Autovista which essentially lets you drool over the cars. The career mode has gotten revamped along with an AI system which will adapt to how you drive. Xbox 360 Controller offers motion controls along with a head tracking feature letting you look around corners from the cockpit and also interact with the cars in Autovista mode. A new lighting system and refined engine grants impeccably detailed and stunningly realistic cars. Simulation racers don’t get much better than this.

Gears of War 3
The swan song of Epic’s trilogy with Delta Squad, Gears of War 3 gives players everything and the kitchen sink. The campaign is quite possibly the strongest in the series, a robust multiplayer component including an expanded Horde mode and an all new Beast mode which lets players swap roles and become the Locust bent on destroying the COGs. The game’s delay Xbox 360 accessories has allowed Epic to refine the experience and polish up the little details including offering players a beta in the spring to make sure this competitive multiplayer is the best of the series. Dedicated servers also help. With new content begin constantly rolled out through Weekend Events or DLC, there’s something here for everyone to enjoy.

The Gunstringer
Developed by the creative guys over at Twisted Pixel especially for Kinect, Gunstringer has you controlling an undead cowboy marionette as he seeks revenge for those responsible for his death. The motion controls for this on rails third person shooter/action game feel great, are responsive and the story features the usual Twisted Pixel humor found in their other downloadable titles. The best part though is that you’re actually playing PS3 accessories a stage hand controlling the puppet so taking hits or doing good will result in cheers and/or jeers from the watching audience. Objects in the environment looks like stage props made from common materials like cardboard and held together by tape for example. It’s a very cool setup to a very cool game.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
With Bungie off of Halo doing other things, 343 Industries stepped in and decided to remake the very first Halo and what better time to release it than 10 years after the original. While the core gameplay and story remain the same, 343 has added in a brand new engine which can be switched on or off whenever you want. If you want it off, you can enjoy the sights Xbox 360 Kinect from the original game, or by flipping it on you’ll see the game running in the powerful Reach engine all at the flick of a button. In addition, 343 has added in Kinect voice recognition for grenade throwing and reloading, added in 3D TV support, remade 7 classic multiplayer maps from the original game, and added in Firefight maps.

Dance Central 2
A sequel to perhaps the Kinect’s showpiece game adds in everything people wanted. New songs, a more robust campaign mode, and the biggest addition, the ability to have 2 players dance side by side. With a very accurate body reading system, and the ability to import the Wii accessories entire track list from the first game, Dance Central’s greatest strength lies in the fact that it gives off an extremely fun party vibe. Try it out, playing this game in front of people will indeed attract a crowd.
So which game rises above? The winner awaits you below:

Winner: Gears of War 3
For me, this really wasn’t any contest. While the other games on this list are great in their own right, Gears of War 3 just rises to another level. Originally planned for an April release, Microsoft seemingly up and delayed the game to a fall release much to the surprise of…well…everyone. In retrospect, this might have been the smartest move as it allowed Epic even more time to fine tune and polish the experience even more. Better yet, they were able to hold a public beta test to make sure that the multiplayer was as good as it could have been. Gears of War 3 succeeds on every level, providing a very satisfying conclusion to Delta Squad’s story and providing a wealth of content with a completely renovated Horde Mode, a fulfilling and finely tuned multiplayer mode, and a fun addition with Beast Mode. Tack on arcade mode and the fact you can co-op the campaign with 4 people and you have a recipe for success.

Play Xbox 360 Games on Windows 8 PCs

The Teknylate article claims that Windows 8 will let users play Xbox 360 games on their PCs, although it attributes no particular source with the information.

Teknylate’s piece appears to be the reason this story has entered the news cycle today, but it’s not entirely new. A very similar story surfaced in May on Insideris, with the author of that piece (who goes by “Sam”) attributed generic “sources” with the information that Xbox 360 functionality on Windows 8 PCs will be reserved for those willing to pay an Xbox Live-like subscription fee.

However, the subscription service won’t simply be Xbox Live, as cross-platform play will specifically be prohibited to avoid competitive mismatches that could arise from one group of players sporting mice and keyboards while others wield standard Xbox 360 controllers.

Such a move would dramatically increase the installed user base for the Xbox 360 and bring console gaming into households that never would have considered picking up a $200 gaming system they would play rarely, if at all. The risk of Microsoft undercutting the Xbox 360 market could also be limited as the console is already older at this point than the original Xbox was when it was discontinued.

The longer Microsoft can ride this generation, the better, but the software giant is rumored to be unveiling its next step forward by E3 2012. And given the razor-razorblade business model the gaming industry generally adheres to (in which hardware is often initially sold at a loss with the money recouped through software sales), perhaps Microsoft wouldn’t mind significantly expanding the Xbox 360 user base without needing to sell more systems.

This isn’t the first time Microsoft has eyed PC and Xbox integration. The company’s original Games for Windows Live initiative brought the Xbox Live gamertag (and games like Gears of War and Halo 2) to PC players with merged friends lists and achievements.

For recent days, rumours about Microsoft Xbox successor is increasingly fierce, it is time to make some design idea Xbox concept to show up, then it is the Xbox Prestige Concept designed by French industrial designer in the following picture.

At first glance, Xbox Prestige is not like other concept design, and it doesn’t appear too weird. From the color of the appearance, it can embody the future science fiction color. The general appearance of Xbox Prestige inherited the popular appearance and black main-color of Microsoft Xbox360 slim ,in addition, console configuration has been highly improved
According to stylist says, Xbox Prestige will not use DVD or blu-ray drive, on the contrary, this Xbox 360 console will store all the game content in the built-in 2 TB hard drive, the new console will adopt the cloud service download games, Xbox Prestige can be wireless connect your TV set. In addition, the new console will built-in KinectIN, support gesture control, also has scan function itself, which can identify the players personal identification card, purchasing the game and managing personal file, etc.
But KinectIN is not the Xbox 360 Kinect sensor, the new console will also collocate Kinect2 sensor, and the Kinect effect of is much more accurate than KinectIN, and can fully capture 3 HD video.

Raam’s Shadow (DLC) and the new Xbox 360 dashboard

Despite it being the end of the year it’s been an incredibly busy weeks (isn’t that always the way, though?) and I’ve still got a few games to get through before I head away for my Christmas/New Year holidays at the end of December. Just between you and me, I don’t actually think I’ll find time to play all the games I’ve yet to get through before year’s end.

One thing I have played is some new single player DLC (downloadable content) for Gears of War 3 – Raam’s Shadow. It comes out on December 13 and will set you back 1200 Microsoft Points. I think it’s worth it as it’s actually a piece of DLC that adds backstory to the Gears trilogy and introduces a new character to the video game series – Michael Barrick (he will be well known to fans of the Gears comic book series) and lets you play as the feared locust commander, General Raam.

Designed as a prequel to the Gears trilogy, Raam’s Shadow takes place in the hours following Emergence Day, when the locust first revealed themselves to the Seran population. Joining Barrick is Lt Minh Young Kim, who had a fatal run in with General Raam in the first Gears game, and Tai Kaliso, who met his fate in Gears 2. Worth noting also is the Raam’s Shadow features one character who gets to play a much larger role in a later Gears game – but I won’t spoil that for you.

The overarching story in this DLC is that Zeta squad have to help evacuate survivors from the city of Ilima before a kryll storm engulfs the city. Gears fans will remember that the kryll are a vicious bat-like creatures that had a great section in the original Gears of War where you had to use light to avoid them. They’re vicious little bastards, to be honest.

Raam’s Shadow plays like a Gears game, so fans will be familiar with the controls and play style but it brings a couple of new elements to the table: one is that you get to use the Hammer of Dawn but from a top-down perspective, blasting locusts forces, and secondly, you get to control General Raam as he forges his way through Ilima city against the COG forces.

Raam is a formidable opponent and he’s surrounded by kryll, which not only protect him from arms fire from COG soldiers but can also be used to unleash an attack on foes, engulfing them in a black cloud and devouring them in with a puff of red mist. Raam also has a fairly devastating knife attack on downed COG. He moves slowly on foot and never takes cover (I guess he’s too big to find cover) but it’s enjoyable playing from the perspective of a locust commander.

Something this DLC has hit home for me, too, is just how visually stunning Gears of War 3′s graphics are: the world is minutely detailed and it’s fascinating seeing buildings and a world that was destroyed and decimated in the Gears trilogy is still almost pristine and intact in Raam’s Shadow.

Raam’s Shadow doesn’t bring anything revolutionary to the Gears series but I found it a satisfying way to spend an afternoon. Multiplayer fans will be pleased to know that the DLC brings six new multiplayer characters and a new weapons skin pack.

The other big bit of news this week was the update to the Xbox 360 dashboard – which has gone all Metro UI on us (just like Windows Phone 7 and the incoming new version of Windows) – and the activation of Kinect voice commands for us New Zealand Xbox 360 owners. I’ve posted a video on my testing the voice commands (sorry about the shakiness and abrupt ending: I used my Flip camcorder rather than my capture device – and it shows). That now means I can navigate my way through the 360′s dashboard environment using gesture and voice – and while I haven’t bothered looking at the gesture commands yet (I’m too lazy) I’ve been using the voice navigation and I’m impressed with how well it works.

I’m finding I’m having to speak a little louder than I would normally but it’s done everything I’ve asked of it: find my games collection, go to the social media apps area, sign me into Xbox Live – I can even turn my console off by saying “Xbox, settings, turn off, yes (to confirm)”. That’s cool but thankfully you can’t turn off the console mid-game or else there would be plenty of angry husbands/boyfriends around the world as their wife/partner/girlfriend had just turned off the console!

One thing that didn’t work for me – and I know several other Kiwis that had trouble getting it to work – was voice commands for Bing Search, Microsoft’s search engine. I asked Xbox NZ”s PR about it and they said that voice commands for Bing Search hadn’t been activated yet for New Zealand but would be rolled out as soon as possible over the next year.

All and all it’s been a busy week on the gaming front.
